How to Lead Successfully

- To lead successfully, you must first know how to follow.
- A Leader has more responsibility to those being led than those being led have to the leader.
- Be a Resource and a Servant â„¢ to those you lead.
- Make people more successful because of your involvement with them than they would have been without it.
- Work from facts more.
- There are so many things that you cannot control. Focus on the things that you can: Your feelings, The attitude you display, Your actions, Your words.
- Provide a compelling Vision of what can be.
- There is nothing positive about being negative.
- You do not get ahead by bringing others down.
- Liberate from the status quo.
- Provide a Line of Sight.
- Get opinions from those you lead. Speak to them. It will widen your view and make them feel more important. People want to be important and appreciated.
- Elicit contribution and facilitate collaboration.
- People decide who they follow. They always have a reason: Trust, Respect, Value, Vision, Appreciation are all reasons of someone engaged. Following the boss because they can be fired means it is just a job.
- A good Leader inspires people to do things and get things done.
- A Leaders' attitude gets reflected and magnified, whether it is positive or negative.
- Being positive when others are negative is a competitive advantage.
- Fear. Fear inhibits action and thinking.
- The way you speak will become reality.
- Have a good filter for your tongue. Always be careful about what you say and the words you use.
- Optimism is a force multiplier. Negativism is a force divider.
- Once you communicate something, it is out there. You cannot take it back.
- Value and respect those you lead.
- Have commitment with a passion.
- Delegation is assigning a task. Empowerment is giving responsibility.
- Never think that you have all the answers. Quality people will not follow someone long who thinks they know all the answers to everything.
- Motivate vs. Inspire?
- Respond vs. React?
- Prioritize. You nor those you lead can do everything at once, nor can they do everything.
- All turnover is not bad. A 10% change, at a minimum, every 1–3 years is probably a good thing.
- People want to be successful. They want to be accountable. Is success possible without accountability?
- Create change. Business strength is gained from working out. Change is the weights.
- Trust begets Trust. Respect begets respect. A Leader cannot demand them. They must be earned.
- Desire vs. Action?
- Want vs. Need?
- Those being led have discretionary energy. They give it because they care and are engaged in what they are doing.
- A Leader must make a decision when a decision is critically needed.
- Do not violate core competency.
- Alignment. Those being led need to understand how everything they do moves the organization forward. They will do things better, if it is important and they know the purpose.
- If something is important, there will be accountability. It will be checked. Part of leading is being in the 'checking' business and providing accountability.
- Assist those being led in achieving their goals.
- Leaders are most effective when they are focused.
- Introduce people to each other daily
- Share information daily.
- Show compassion daily.
- Make those that you lead important.
- Establish transparent expectations. It cannot be expected if it is not known.
- Be a student of those you lead, and be a student of people in general. Anticipate how they will respond. Put those you lead into the best situation possible for them to be successful and also accomplish the organization's objectives.
